I'm not sure what you mean by "hand waving".

And I'm not quite sure why am I obliged to provide you with "practical cases (plus code)".

If you don't find any use cases for pointers in your code (ie, you have no need for the physical address where values are stored), that's fine, I won't hunt you for that :)
